Child Advocacy Services, SEGA, Inc.

I am a proud supporter of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and have been on the Board of Directors since 2010, most currently as the chair, for Child Advocacy Services, SEGA, Inc. (CASA Ogeechee). As a former child welfare worker and current university professor, I can tell you this is a vital program for our community. The mission of CASA is to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courts. We promote and support quality volunteer representation for children to provide each child a safe, permanent, nurturing home. In 2016, CASA Ogeechee became Child Advocacy Services SEGA, Inc. to reflect the additional services we provide to foster children and their families. We now have two Visitation Centers in which children have regular supervised visits in a homelike environment with their parents who are actively seeking reunification.

The Statesboro Commission on Diversity and Inclusion or “One Boro”

I am also excited that I was appointed by Mayor Jonathan McCollar in 2019 to serve as the Chair of the Statesboro Commission on Diversity and Inclusion, also known as “One Boro.” We’ve conducted Facilitated Group Listening (FGLL) sessions in all five districts in Statesboro. We also held a community-wide event, called “The Longest Table,” on Saturday, October 12, 2019, with over 200 attendees at the GSU City campus. A host was seated at each section of the table to help guide conversations as attendees discussed questions like, “what kind of community do you want?” and “what are the most important issues facing our community right now.” A picture of the Longest Table was featured in the Statesboro Herald and was deemed one of the most popular images of 2019.

We are currently working with the community on drafting a nondiscrimination ordinance and equity package to present to the City of Statesboro in the upcoming year.
